Headaches are awful! At best, a headache can distract you and put you in a bad mood. At worst, the pain can be debilitating. If you frequently suffer from headaches, you probably already know that they can have a wide range of causes. And one of those potential causes is TMJ disorder (TMD)! What does a TMJ headache feel like, and how might you be able to find relief? This blog post provides some helpful information.

How Does TMJ Disorder Cause Headaches?

TMJ disorder, also known as temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD), is a common condition that arises when the jaw joints (TMJs) become inflamed or damaged. It can cause tension throughout the muscles of the head and neck. In turn, that tension can lead to headaches. Additionally, because the TMJs are so close to important nerves, TMD may irritate those nerves and trigger pain signals that turn into headaches.

If TMD remains untreated for too long, the stress and damage on the jaw joints can gradually worsen. This might mean that symptoms become more frequent and severe over time.

What Does a TMJ Headache Feel Like?

A TMJ headache often feels like a dull, aching pain located near your temples or around your jaw. You might sense a tightness or pressure that seems to radiate from the jaw joints to the sides of your head. Some people describe a TMJ headache as similar to a tension headache, but with additional discomfort in the jaw or facial muscles. You could also experience pain that spreads to your neck or shoulders, making it difficult to pinpoint exactly where the headache originates.

Unlike migraines, TMJ headaches rarely come with visual disturbances or severe nausea (although it is important to note that TMD can be a trigger for those who are predisposed to migraines). Instead, the pain is typically persistent and may worsen with jaw movement or clenching. You may also notice clicking or popping noises in your jaw, along with difficulty opening your mouth fully. These symptoms are important clues that your headache might be related to TMJ disorder rather than another underlying health issue.

Treatment Options for TMD

Some home remedies, such as over-the-counter pain medications, heat or ice therapy, and rest for the jaw joints, may provide temporary relief from TMJ headaches. However, if you want lasting benefits, you should seek professional care.

A dentist who is trained in how to diagnose and treat TMD can evaluate your case and recommend your next steps. Depending on the details of your situation, they might suggest:

  • Equilibration: This treatment involves minor adjustments to your teeth so they fit better together. It can decrease stress on the TMJs.
  • Occlusal splint: This is a custom-made device designed to be worn at night. It can reposition your jaw in a way that provides relief from TMD.
  • BOTOX injections: BOTOX can force your facial muscles to relax, which can provide significant pain relief.

TMJ headaches are a bummer, but fortunately, they can be stopped! Visit a qualified dentist to learn about your options.
