Whether you have braces or clear aligners, you are going to experience some discomfort. This occurs because the teeth are slowly shifting which is bound to cause some soreness in the mouth. It is normal for this to happen for the first few days after putting in new trays. The good news is that there steps you can take to relieve Invisalign discomfort. Continue reading to learn some effective tips from your dentist in Severna Park.

Cold Compress

An excellent way to sooth swollen and sore tissues in your mouth is by using a cold compress. This method numbs the area to lessen pain while also reducing inflammation. This technique is effective against the discomfort you feel after getting a new set of Invisalign.

Pain Medication

If you’re experiencing a lot of soreness, over the counter pain relievers can help. Just take the type of medication that you normally would for a headache. Be sure to only take as directed and ask your doctor before taking a medication that you haven’t used before. Ibuprofen and acetaminophen are popular options.

Saltwater

A more natural trick you can use is making your own mouth rinse with salt. Just add about half a teaspoon of table salt into a glass of warm water. Take a sip and rinse your sore gums before spitting it out. Continue doing this until all of the water is gone. This method works because it helps to reduce inflammation and sooth irritated tissues in the mouth.

Avoid Hard Foods

When you have a sore mouth from wearing a new set of aligners, crunching down on hard foods can make it feel even more uncomfortable. For the first few meals after you put in your new trays, try to stick to softer foods.

Switch Your Aligners Before Bed

Most people first the most discomfort for the first few hours after putting in their new aligners. By putting them in before bedtime, you will be sleeping during the most sensitive hours when your teeth are moving the most dramatically.

See Your Dentist

You should see your dentist on a regular basis throughout the course of your Invisalign in Severna Park. This way, they will be able to detect problems that could be contributing to your discomfort. If you have an edge of your aligner that is causing some irritation, this is a great time to bring it up. They may be able to adjust the edge by softening and reducing it.

Invisalign may not be the most comfortable treatment in the world, but by taking the steps listed above, you will be about to work towards straighter teeth with less discomfort. You will reach your smile goals before you know it.
